Christmas is almost here! For many of us, now it the time to slack off work and count the seconds until the big man arrives. For ecommerce shop owners, nothing could be further from the truth; it’s the busiest time of the year. If you want to make the most of the extra Christmas traffic to your ecommerce site this year, keep reading. Here are eleven cracking tips to help boost your conversion rates and ensure a very merry Christmas indeed.

  • 1. Wrap it

“I love wrapping mountains of gifts,” said nobody, ever. Do you offer a gift wrapping service? If so, make sure you advertise it prominently on your website. If you don’t usually offer this service but you will have the resources to, adding it as an optional extra over the festive period is a great way of increasing conversion rates.

  • 2. Follow up

Christmas is an excellent time to start gathering email addresses for special promotions in the future. A great way of encouraging shoppers to leave their email addresses is to offer early access to any post-Christmas sales you’ll be having. Nobody wants to miss out on a bargain.

  • 3. Offer free delivery

For many shoppers desperate to find that perfect gift for a loved one, it’s the promise of free delivery that often helps seal the deal on an impulse purchase. If you can absorb the cost of free delivery on all of your products that’s great, but for many small businesses it’s more realistic to offer free delivery on a fixed average value order.

  • 4. Get festive

‘Tis the season to be jolly after all, so why not sprinkle a little bit of festive cheer onto your website using traditional Christmas designs and colours.

  • 5. Get seasonal on social media

Don’t be afraid to get a little celebratory on your social media accounts. Whether it’s carefree Instagram pics of your Christmas staff party or sharing vintage Home Alone quotes on Twitter, a little light-hearted festive fun goes a long way to build trust and brand loyalty that lasts all year long.

  • 6. Don’t forget

Not everyone loves or celebrates Christmas so don’t overdo it. Not every page on your website needs to be decorated in red, gold and green.

  • 7. Keep it simple

If you do adopt a Christmas theme for your home page or a special landing page, don’t forget the basic rules of web design. In order for content to be useable, it needs to be clear and easy to navigate.

  • 8. Target last-minute shoppers

We all know somebody who has bought and wrapped all of their gifts by the end of November. But there are thousands of people out there who leave everything to the very last minute – including people on your mailing list. So make the most out of the contact details you have and send out special last-minute deals to your registered customers.

  • 9. Plan ahead for PPC campaigns

Successful PPC campaigns can work wonders for Christmas sales. Find out how to get the most from your Christmas PPC campaigns with these simple tips.

  • 10. Think ahead

With all the fuss in the run up to Christmas, it’s easy to forget about what comes after Santa has made all of his deliveries – the sales. Increasingly, they start on Christmas day itself, so don’t forget to take time out to create a sales strategy if you’ll be running post- Christmas promotions.

  • 11. Don’t forget customer service

Christmas is often the busiest time for ecommerce businesses, but that’s no excuse for letting customer service standards drop. Remember: first impressions count. Hire in extra help for the Christmas period to assist you with answering queries or posting deliveries.
