Magento Marketplace Set For Launch 2016

As far as e-commerce platforms go, Magneto 2.0 is right up there with the very best of them. The launch of this CMS last month was cause for celebration, and hot on the heels of November’s revelation is another piece of news that’s likely to make business owners head into the new year with a smile on their faces. A new Magento Marketplace is all set to be up and running in Beta at some stage this month, with a full launch expected in the first quarter of 2016.

How Is Magento Marketplace Being Launched?

As is so often the case in the evolving world of e-commerce, it’ll be a case of “out with the old, in with the new” for Magento during the next calendar year. The existing Magento Connect site will continue to operate whilst a few tweaks and transfers are made, but once all the necessary reviewing and data shifting has been completed, Magento Connect will be no more. A sad thought this initially may be, but any grief you might have had about the loss of Magento Connect is sure to slowly ebb away when you understand the kind of advantages Magento Marketplace has over its predecessor.

The whole migration and data shift process from Connect to Marketplace may sound like a laborious chore, but in fact it will be good for everyone. Each and every extension that’s shifted to the phoenix site will be entered into a rigorous Basic Check. This basically means that the programs and extensions will be carefully evaluated for malware, viruses, plagiarised content, security issues or any other vulnerabilities. Thanks to the Basic Check system, the Magento Marketplace will be a substantially safer and thoroughly more efficient site than Magento Connect ever was, with only the highest quality extensions making it through to the other side. This, somewhat inevitably, does mean that the number of extensions available to users will be considerably lower than they were on Magento Connect. But overall this is a small price to pay, as the ones that do exist will be extremely safe and far superior.

How Is Magento Marketplace Going To Work?

Magento Marketplace is going to operate on the principle of a brand new “revenue share” model thought up by the bigwigs at Magento in recent months. In its simplest terms, the model is a 70/30 profit split on product sales. On any revenue a product sale brings in, Magento will be entitled to 30% of that number. The rest is yours to keep.

If you’re a provider who’s keeping a close eye on the development of Magento Marketplace and its inner workings, you’ll be happy to know that you’ll be free to continue marketing your own extensions from your own website. There’s likely to be significantly less competition too, and although 30% of the revenue is handed over to Magento, you’ll be able to take advantage of a free-to-submit app service, as well as a series of free extensions and themes on offer.
