How much is the UK manufacturing ecommerce industry predicted to grow?

Find out what the future looks like for manufacturing ecommerce.

At Fluid Commerce we regularly work with manufacturing companies that are hungry for online sales growth and we’ve also seen them achieve this ambition. But just how much is the UK manufacturing ecommerce market as a whole expected to grow?

The answer is a lot, but to fully understand what’s happening in manufacturing ecommerce we need to firstly look at the wider UK B2B ecommerce market that the manufacturing industry falls within.

The UK B2B ecommerce market is experiencing a period of sustained, double digit growth, as the industry moves towards an online first commerce model and away from traditional methods such as telesales, trade centres and physical catalogues.

Recent market forecasts suggest the UK B2B ecommerce market will grow at a compound annual growth rate of roughly 16 to 23%  over the next decade. Some projections indicate the market could exceed $700 billion by 2030, equivalent to approximately £550 to £570 billion at recent exchange rates, with longer term estimates running into the trillions by the early 2030s. While methodologies differ between research providers, the consistent message we are hearing (and seeing in our own B2B ecommerce projects is clear:digital procurement and online B2B transactions are accelerating rapidly across the UK economy.

What is driving UK B2B ecommerce growth?

Several huge shifts are pushing the UK B2B ecommerce market forward.

Procurement digitisation is becoming standard practice. UK businesses are investing in ecommerce platforms, integrated ERP systems and automated purchasing workflows to increase the number and value of orders, drive customer loyalty whilst simultaneously reducing operational costs improving internal efficiency

Another big shift that we have talked about many times at Fluid Commerce is the change in buyer expectations. Business buyers increasingly expect the same seamless experience they receive in B2C ecommerce in their personal lives, including real time stock visibility, transparent pricing, flexible delivery options and easy reordering.

Thirdly, supply chain resilience has become a strategic priority. Digital channels such as customer portals provide better business information, analytics and agility, helping businesses manage any disruption more effectively.

Finally, advances in payment technology, data integration and API driven platforms are making complex B2B transactions easier to manage at scale.

How much of this growth comes from manufacturing?

Manufacturing plays a central role in the UK B2B ecommerce ecosystem. Manufacturers sell components, raw materials, machinery and finished goods to wholesalers, distributors, retailers and other industrial buyers, much of it now transacted digitally.

In broader digital commerce forecasts for the UK, manufacturing and distribution together account for just over 20% of total ecommerce transactions. In B2B specific models, industrial and manufacturing related transactions typically represent one of the largest vertical segments.

Based on aggregated industry estimates, it is reasonable to expect that manufacturing and closely related industrial sectors contribute between 20% and 30% of total UK B2B ecommerce value. This means that as the overall B2B ecommerce market grows at high teens or low twenties annual rates, a significant share of that expansion will be directly linked to manufacturing businesses digitising their sales channels.

For example, if the UK B2B ecommerce market were to reach the equivalent of around £550 to £570 billion by 2030, manufacturing and industrial sectors’ online transactions could account for well over £110 to £170 billion pounds of that total, depending on sector mix and classification. To put that into context, online figures speculate that the UK manufacturing industry as a whole could reach revenues of £206 billion, meaning online transactions could account for more than 50% of that figure.

Why this matters for uk manufacturers

As specialists in B2B ecommerce development, the team at Fluid Commerce understands that for UK manufacturers, ecommerce is no longer simply an additional sales channel. It is becoming core infrastructure.

Buyers expect:

  • Accurate, real time stock visibility

  • Customer specific pricing and custom catalogues

  • Self service account management

  • Fast, predictable delivery options

  • Access to their agreed credit limits and pay on account facilities

Manufacturers that cannot support these expectations risk losing share to more digitally mature competitors.

At the same time, ecommerce enables manufacturers to:

  • Reach new domestic and international markets

  • Sell direct to business customers

  • Capture first party data on buyer behaviour

  • Improve margins by removing the middlemen

  • Streamline order management and fulfilment

The shift is not purely commercial, it is operational. Fulfilment strategy, warehouse management, delivery performance and returns handling are becoming central to keeping manufacturing ecommerce companies competitive.

Looking ahead

The outlook for UK B2B ecommerce is strong, with sustained double digit annual growth projected across multiple research models. Manufacturing will account for a substantial proportion of that expansion, likely between one fifth and one third of total market value depending on sector definitions.

For UK manufacturers, the question is no longer whether ecommerce will shape the industry, but how quickly they can adapt their operations, technology and fulfilment strategy to capture their share of the growth.

As digital procurement becomes standard across the UK economy, manufacturers that invest now in scalable ecommerce and fulfilment infrastructure, supported by experienced partners such as Fluid Commerce, will be best positioned to lead the next phase of industrial commerce.
