How Magento delivers growth for B2B ecommerce companies

As a Magento agency, Magento development is a fundamental part of Fluid Commerce and an area that we have specialised in for more years than I care to remember. For the traditional B2B companies we work with, the Magento and Adobe Commerce platforms have stood out as solid choices for the powerful ecommerce stores and customer portals they require for some time. However, the ecommerce ecosystem is constantly shifting, and other platforms have emerged that companies now need to consider.

In our opinion Magento Open Source still stands as one of the best options for ecommerce websites and customer portals that require a high level of B2B functionality, especially when paired with other technology such as the Hyvä Commerce front-end theme, and Fluid’s in-house B2B accelerator Portal. In this article I’ll look specifically at how Magento Open Source delivers growth for B2B companies that are looking to digitalise their traditional customers. Many of these reasons also apply to the Adobe Commerce version, but here I am focusing on Magento for businesses that prefer an Open Source route.

1. Deeply flexible and highly customisable

Magento is rightly considered one of the most flexible and customisable ecommerce platforms, for any size of company. This is because it is built on modular architecture, meaning its functionality is divided into modules (or components), for example checkout, catalogue, shipping, and customer accounts. Each module can be enabled, disabled, or extended independently, so Magento developers can customise specific parts of the site without affecting others. This modular design also allows for third-party extensions and custom modules to be added easily.

The ability to customise a Magento site is almost limitless. Different front-end themes can be used (for our Magento B2B clients we recommend Hyvä Commerce as the speed it provides is unparalleled), custom pricing and catalogues can be easily added, as can other B2B specific features such as payment gateways (our recommended payment gateway at Fluid is Mollie, but we have experience with many others).

There are countless other B2B features that either come as standard with Magento, or we can add as a Magento development agency, including rapid order, repeat order and pay on account with company credit. For these reasons, Magento is extremely well-suited for B2B.

2. Seamless ERP and technology integrations

The ease of ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning) integrations is one of Magento’s biggest strengths in B2B ecommerce.

Magento was designed to provide enterprise-level flexibility and open architecture, which makes connecting it to ERP systems like IntactIQ, Sage X3, OGL Profitplus and NetSuite (to name a few) relatively straightforward.

As a Magento development agency, Fluid Commerce has carried out many ERP integrations and we understand that it’s crucial that the process is seamless, with minimum disruption to company data and systems. Thankfully that’s fairly easy to achieve with Magento, which has been created to deliver just that, for even large companies with high sales volume.

3. Advanced pricing and catalogue control

Magento is well known for its advanced pricing and catalogue control, which makes it perfect for traditional B2B companies. Magento allows pricing to be set and managed at different levels, giving companies granular control over how each customer sees prices. Providing custom pricing on an ecommerce website for trade buyers is a game changer for encouraging those customers to order via the website, rather than pick up the phone or call into a trade centre. Many simply won’t use an ecommerce website to purchase their goods if they can’t get the price that they have agreed with their company contact, so this is one area that is absolutely critical to a B2B retailer’s online success.

4. Customer portals as standard with option to upgrade

Magento’s customer portals (often called customer dashboards or account areas) are one of its most powerful yet underrated features, especially when it comes to B2B commerce.

Magento offers customer portals out of the box, which some other competing platforms do not. There is then the option to upgrade to more intelligent options with Adobe Commerce that have more advanced features.

The standard Magento out of the box customer portal provides the following:

Order Management

  • View past orders, including details like items, total cost, shipping method, and order status.
  • Reorder products directly from past orders.
  • Print order invoices and shipments.

Account Information

  • Edit personal details (name, email, password).
  • Manage stored addresses (billing and shipping).
  • Add multiple addresses to an address book.

Payment and Billing

  • Depending on the payment gateway, customers can view or manage stored payment methods (e.g., saved credit cards, PayPal).
  • View invoices and transaction summaries.

There are also other basic customer management features that come with Magento as standard, including communication preferences and newsletter sign up.

5. Robust security features

Even though Magento is free, it still includes strong, enterprise-level security features that make it well-suited for B2B environments, where data protection, access control, and transaction integrity are critical.

Our clients find many of these features extremely useful but one in particular is the ability to create multiple admin users and assign them to specific roles with granular permissions.

This is essential in B2B operations where multiple staff (sales, warehouse, finance) access the backend.

Other features include two factor authentication for admin accounts, advanced password  security, fully compliant secure checkout and payment, data encryption and the release of regular security patch updates, plus many more.

For these reasons, Magento is one of the most reliable platforms for ecommerce security and the B2B clients we work with enjoy the safety that provides for them and their customers.

6. Strong developer ecosystem

The subject of the strong Magento developer ecosystem is one that gets to the heart of why it has remained a top choice for B2B ecommerce companies for over a decade.

Magento’s developer ecosystem is one of the most mature, extensive, and active in the entire ecommerce industry. It’s a huge part of what makes the platform so flexible, customisable, and reliable for B2B ecommerce companies. There are hundreds of thousands of highly-skilled developers working across Magento agencies (such as Fluid Commerce), freelancers, and in-house teams. Access to such a strong talent pool ensures that B2B ecommerce companies get great tech expertise for their sites and that regular development is possible.

Legitimate alternatives but Magento remains a main contender

As I’ve said above, legitimate contenders to Magento have emerged in the B2B ecommerce market, and it is right that companies carry out their due diligence and investigate those options. However, for us as a B2B ecommerce agency, the platform remains a main contender for many of our clients as it’s the complete package for traditional B2B companies.
